A group of indigenous students at Western University are making waves for themselves as the “Sisters of All Nations,” a women’s hand drumming group. They’ve opened for internationally renowned hip hop star Shad K, and for folk singer, Susan Aglukark. For these women, the drumming is a way to bring cultural awareness while simultaneously keeping them connected to their own roots. Ceremony and drumming was outright illegal in Canada until September 4, 1951. They believe learning and taking back these songs is important to their cultural survival. Sara Mai Chitty met with several of the women in Sisters of All Nations and the Elder who supports them.
